Following Dentures & Partial

Anesthetic Precautions

When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.

It is normal to experience some hot, cold & pressure sensitivity after your appointment. Injection sites may also be sore. If you are able, Ibuprofen (Motrin), Tylenol or aspirin (one tablet every 3-4 hours as needed for pain) work well to alleviate the tenderness. If pressure sensitivity persists beyond a few days or if the sensitivity to hot or cold increases, contact our office at Root River Dental Phone Number 507-533-7735.

After New Dentures or Partial Dentures

Remember that it will take time to adjust to the feel of your new dentures or partials. When the bite is altered or the position of the teeth is changed it may take several days or weeks for the brain to recognize the new position of your teeth or the presence of the dental prosthesis as normal. If you continue to detect any high spots or problems with your bite, call our office at Root River Dental Phone Number 507-533-7735 so we can schedule an adjustment appointment.

It is normal to experience some sore spots as a result of your new dentures or partials. These sore spots will need to be adjusted by Dr. Lechner, please do not attempt to make adjustments at home – this could lead to irreversible damage to your new dentures or partials. It is normal to require multiple adjustments following new dentures or partials to remove any sore spots or improve your bite.

The tissue requires some time to heal after removal of tooth structure and will be sensitive in the interim. Your gums may also be sore for a few days. Warm salt water rinses (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) three times a day will reduce pain and swelling. A mild pain medication (one tablet of Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Motrin) every 3-4 hours) should ease any residual discomfort.

Don’t be concerned if your speech is affected for the first few days or weeks. You’ll quickly adapt and be speaking normally. You may notice increased salivation. This is because your brain is responding to the new denture or partial. This should subside to normal in about a week.

It is import to remove your new dentures or partials after each meal and every night to cleanse the dental prosthesis and perform Daily brushing and flossing. If you do not remove the dental prosthesis you may be at increased risk for fungal infections, cavities or periodontal (gum) disease

It is important for the long-term success of your dentures or partials to continue regular dental cleaning and exams appointments. If you have any problems or concerns, please contact Root River Dental at Root River Dental Phone Number 507-533-7735. We always welcome your questions.

To clean your dentures or partials, it is recommended to rinse them under warm water and cleanse them with a soft-bristled denture brush or toothbrush.

When you are not using your dentures or partials, it is recommended to leave them in water so the prosthesis does not dry out. Dry dentures or partials can be susceptible to cracking, chipping or loosening denture teeth.

It is recommended to clean your dentures or partials with an over-the-counter denture cleaner like Efferdent or Polident every two to three nights.

If you need to use over-the-counter denture adhesive to retain your dentures or partials, this may indicate that your dentures or partials are in need of evaluation and possible reline or remake.
